Tips

Tips from A&J Sewer

Tip #1 – Get your septic system pumped and inspected regularly.

Tip #2 – Your septic tank usually has 3 openings or ports, on the inlet side, outlet side and center. This is very important to know. If you have a two compartment tank, it may not get cleaned properly by opening only one port.

If your contractor doesn’t open at least the inlet and outlet side of the tank he or she can’t do a proper cleaning or a thorough inspection of the tank and pipes. If your tank has not been pumped at the proper interval, more than likely there is a large amount of solids throughout the tank both on the inlet and the outlet side. If your current contractor is not opening these inspection ports, it’s likely that your tank has not been properly cleaned.

Tip #3 – Make sure any rain water collects or discharges away from the septic system, including your sump pump.

Tip #4 – Do not dump any hazardous materials or chemicals down your waste lines, this will kill the bacteria in your septic system and damage your drainage fields and is not good for the environment.

Tip #5 – Make sure there is always easy access to your tank openings. Risers make this much easier. Know where your system is. Map it out and keep the map readily available.

Tip #6 – Don’t do a lot of laundry in one day, do it in intervals.

Tip #7 – Be conservative with water usage. Fix any dripping faucets or toilets.

Tip #8 – Stay away from garbage disposals, do not flush fats ,grease, oil, cigarettes, feminine products, paper towels or Kleenex down your toilet or other drains. These things can cause any part of your septic system to fail or cause blockages and wind up costing you a lot of money in repairs.

Tip #9 – Do not drive on your septic system or drainage fields.

Tip #10 – Do not build anything on top of your tank or any part of the system.

Tip #11 – Keep trees and shrubs away from any part of your septic system. Deep rooting shrubs or trees will cause blockages and damage the system.

A & J took the time to explain our catch basin and drain system to really help us feel more educated about what we are dealing with. They gave us some ideas that were not even part of their services and also rodded out our drain lines and supplied a video showing them crystal clear. I would recommend them to any homeowner in need of drain or septic service.
